Pursuit:
Making the Most of Your Visit and Interview10th Edition
By G. Gary Ripple, Ph.D.
What Does a Good
College Visit Include?
Most importantly, a
productive visit depends on your being able to schedule
enough time to absorb something of each campus,
especially if you are travelling a great distance and
going to much time and expense in making the call. The
ingredients of a successful visit include the following:
- A personal
interview
- A campus tour,
including the student center, athletic
facilities, library and computer center
- A visit to
facilities of special interest, for example, the
art museum, dance studio, campus theater, music
hall, or science lab
- A visit to at least
one class in an academic area of interest
- A conversation with
a professor in that area
- At least one meal
in a campus dining hall
- An overnight stay
in a dormitory
- A thorough study of
college information (be sure to pick up admission
and financial aid application forms
- A visit to the
college bookstore
- Reading a recent
copy of the student newspaper
- Plenty of free time
to stroll the campus and observe all ongoing
activities.
If
you can't fit all these elements in, how do you choose?
What if you can't visit a school? And, how do you prepare
for the interviews? To be sure you make the most informed
decision, read Campus Pursuit.
